Our school counselors interact with students as needed through classroom presentations, small groups, parent meetings and individually. The staff strives to partner with teachers and family members as much as possible to assist students in being successful both in the school environment and after graduation. They can also provide resources to parents for other services that might be beneficial, such as community health resources and professional counseling. The following is a list of student support programs offered by the WHS School Counseling Department.
Personalized Enrollment
In an effort to partner with parents on academic and career goal-setting, all students are individually enrolled with a school counselor in the spring semester for the following year. Students and their families are encouraged to use the online course description program prior to the meeting. During the enrollment appointment, students choose classes as well as discuss post-high school options. In addition, the counselor will review graduation and State Scholar Curriculum requirements.
Peer Counselors
Mrs. Roacho teaches a class of peer counselors, They are extensively trained in listening to and supporting other students. They host new student parties, maintain and run the Raider Supply Closet, create small projects throughout the semester to better the school community, and are available as needed to support individual students in the school. They also assist with special projects and presentations for the school. Students are accepted by application only.
Raider Crew
The counselors are involved in leading Raider Crew, a group of upper-classmen who volunteer and are trained to work with incoming freshmen to help them be successful during their first year of high school. This group will lead the freshman opening day that is held at the beginning of the school year. Students are accepted by application only.
Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD)
The School Counseling office sponsors a local chapter of Students Against Destructive Decisions, in an effort to educate students about making smart decisions concerning the use of drugs, alcohol, and tobacco.
